The right fishing kayak for you (a few points to consider)

It is early morning and the ocean is as smooth as glass. The wind is still and there’s a silent, peacefulness about the world. You watch the sun rise slowly from over the burrows as the new day dawns. When suddenly, the silence is broken by a strong tugging on the line! This is kayak fishing at its best and anyone who tries it will agree. The kayak fishing fraternity has grown massively in the past 5 years and there is a never-ending hunger for information.

The sport of kayak fishing has been around for a fairly long time now. However, it has only been in the last five years in which we have seen a huge influx in the sport. Fishermen have realised the advantages of kayak fishing, Long gone are the hassles of owning and maintaining a boat. now the chap who has always fished from the shoreline, can imagine himself reaching new horizons by fishing from a kayak, it all makes  sense!

Kayak fishing is not just a sport; it’s a lifestyle and a healthy one at that. One of the great things about kayak fishing is that it will take you to some of the most beautiful places in North Devon.
Adrian a mate of mine told me about a once in a life time experience. Himself and a fishing buddy were kayaking this summer one mile off  Hartland Point   and  were suddenly surrounded by twenty  dolphins! He said “it was absolutly magical”.
We also have an amazing photo in our shop in Bideford of a kayaker in the lee of Lundy island, you can actualy see a basking shark underneath him!
This just shows you, one doesn’t need to spend thousands of pounds and travel half way around the world to experience this magic, it’s on our very own doorstep.

Choosing a fishing kayak
It’s true, you can fish from anything that floats. However, a bit of thought will enhance the experience when choosing a kayak. Comfort has to be the most important point, after all your going to be sitting for hours on end! So once you’ve narrowed you choice down, make sure you try sitting in the kayak of your choice before buying it.
The rule of  kayak dynamics, is that the longer the kayak, the faster and straighter it will paddle. kayaks generally need to be in the 4 meter range, anything shorter, they tend to not track very well and be sluggish. This will be fine for a general purpose kayak. But for fishing, you will be wanting to get to where the fish are! So kayaks longer than 4 metres will very likely require a rudder, as a slight bit of wind on the bow will make it difficult to keep on course. These are all points one needs to be aware of.

OutfittingYou can buy a general purpose kayak you can fish from, or you can go a little further and have it fitted out to make the experience all the more comfortable! Things to consider are how accessable the storage hatch are? The location of  rod holders?. Deck storage size? How comfortable are the carrying handles? The real keen fisherman may look at anchor trolley systems and various fish finders.

Transportation
One last imporant point! Just imagine having to drag a  25kg kayak up from a Westaward Ho! beach at low tide (plus equipment) not forgetting the fish you’ve caught!  Your car is parked at the back of the pebble ridge. I think you may realise a trolley is a must!

I have only scratched the surface here, but I hope this has given you some food for thought when buying a fishing kayak and getting out there to fish, as you would love it!
